Based on the best-selling novel, this German drama follows the fortunes of two sisters whose relationship is torn apart by the Second World War. When their parents die, Anna (Nadja Uhl) and Lotte (Thekla Reuten) are separated, Lotte to live with relatives in the Netherlands while Anna remains in Germany. Estranged from one another during the war, and losing contact thereafter, as an old woman fifty years later, Anna seeks out her sister, only to find that their different war experiences may have damaged their relationship forever.
