Remember Wreckless Eric? Eric Goulden to his mum, Ian Dury's mate, the former Butlin's odd-job employee with the twisted nasal annunciation and the excitingly oddball take on pub rock & roll? You should. And if you don't, then it's not fair. Let Greatest Stiffs jog your memory. His short, sharp and chaotic tenure at Stiff Records (and there were some farcically "lubricated" live shows to go with it) begat two minor pop classics of the time, the it-should-have-been-a-hit "Whole Wide World" (actually, it was a hit, Number 46, which is close enough) and "Reconnez Cherie", every bit the teen-love equal of "Jilted John" with it's talk of late nights and clumsy experimental fumblings with French girls at bus stops. He had a great sense of humour--"The Final Taxi" ("There's only one destination in the final taxi") is actually about a hearse on the way to a funeral. And even when he got all "professional" and elocutionary on the "Big Smash" album he could still be good melodic value ("Broken Doll", for instance). Greatest Stiffs represents the definitive overview of Wreckless Eric's Stiff Records years. Furthermore, all the tracks have been remastered by the man himself. He must be very pleased.
