Great Rock & Roll
True Believers were a big rock and roll band with big guitars, big songs and big dreams. They also had history.
True Believers were famous before they were famous.
The combined resume of the band members were impeccable. Guitarist Alejandro Escovedo and drummer Kevin Foley were members of legendary San Francisco punk band “The Nuns” (who opened for final Sex Pistols show ever at the Fillmore). Bassist Denny DeGorio was also from San Francisco. Guitarist Javier Escovedo was the leader of San Diego’s founding punk band “The Zeroes”. Guitarist Jon Dee Graham was a veteran of Austin punk pioneers “The Skunks” and new wavers “The Lift”.
In 1983 Alejandro Escovedo left the successful “Rank and File” to start a new band in Austin, Texas. He recruited his brother Javier, former bandmate Foley, DeGorio and Graham and called them True Believers.
For a city that had seen and heard it all, Austin had never seen or heard anything quite like True Believers. Foley and DeGorio established a relentless rhythm section for three — THREE — phenomenal lead vocalists/lead guitarists. Jon Dee Graham was passionately sincere. Alejandro Escovedo was a serious rock and roller. Javier Escovedo was perhaps the most beautiful man on Earth. And he looked — and sounded — dangerous.
Their original songs echoed The New York Dolls, Lou Reed and The Stooges. Within a year True Believers were one of the hottest live acts in Austin. And their regional reputation was growing. Record companies showed interest. And confusion. They’d never seen anything quite like True Believers, either.
Between 1984 and 1985 I must have seen True Believers play more than 50 shows at The Continental Club, The Texas Union, Black Cat Lounge, Steamboat, The Beach, Liberty Lunch, the Arc Coop as well as countless places in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
By 1985 the band’s manager, Joe Nick Patoski, secured a deal with Rounder Records. The legendary Jim Dickinson was brought in to produce the album. Mike Stewart engineered the recording sessions at Austin’s Riverside Sound. And the entire album was finished in less than a week for under $8,000.00.
The debut album was released in 1986 and True Believers were on their way.
True Believers toured successfully in 1986. They packed clubs from New York to Chicago to San Francisco. They were the undisputed heavy weight champions of their hometown Austin, Texas. No one could touch them. True Believers shows were “must be there” events.
Once upon a time in Austin, Texas there was a band so amazing that we were certain they’d conquer the world. They were True Believers. And so were we.
