Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich), Camilla Belle (Practical Magic), Beau Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys), Jason Lee (Almost Famous) and Jena Malone (Saved!) co-star. Jack (Day-Lewis) and his 16-year-old daughter Rose (Belle) live in relative isolation on a beautiful island off the East Coast. When he invites his mainland girlfriend (Keener) and her two teenage sons to come live with them, it is Rose's first exposure to society - and sexuality. As always Daniel Day-Lewis pours his heart, soul, and mind into whatever character he is portraying; in this case it is Jack, a disillusioned 60's survivor who lives on an isolated island with his teenage daughter, Rose. I have read that Day-Lewis lived alone on the island for months to prepare for the movie, built his island home himself, lost significant weight, and even had tattoos scratched into his arms! Day-Lewis is a singular actor, seemingly impossible for him to not give a GREAT performance. The supporting cast are mostly all excellent as well. That said, this film, written and directed by Rebecca Miller, Day-Lewis' real life wife, is not without flaws. In particular, the ending is rather melodramatic and the scene two years after the fire is superfluous and unnecessary.. Miller's use of symbols can also become rather irksome and rather heavy-handed. For example, there is a copperhead snake slithering around during a loss of virginity scene. But watching a Day-Lewis performance is always a gift and a joy. He is a great, great actor.
