ROBBIE HILL & THE BLUE 62’s – Price To Pay (Music Avenue)
What we have here is a package of standard blues fare, but delivered with enough polish and expertise to warrant attention.
It kicks off with the pendulous rhythm of the title track “Price To Pay”, featuring some excellent slide guitar work. There is a slice of soul with “You Ain’t Right”, a bit of boogie in “No Place To Hide”, some rock & roll with “Praise To Helsinki” and a whole lot of slow and fast blues in this selection from Robbie.
The music is well crafted and provides plenty of diverting entertainment and at 10 tracks, it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Robbie’s voice has a good earnest feel to it and compliments the music admirably. Nothing off-the-wall or Earth-shaking going on here, just a good solid blues album featuring bad women, broken hearts and the usual suspects of themes.
My personal favourite song is the stripped down boogie rocker “No Place To Hide”, but it has to be said that the slower, sombre blues tracks are where Robbie and his band truly feel at home. Mr Hill knows his blues and displays a good practical approach to the genre. I get the impression that there is more depth and scope to come from this group. Here’s hoping this blues outfit goes on to greater things.
