Eleanor "Tussy" Marx (1855 London – 1898 London), also known as Eleanor Marx Aveling, was the English-born youngest daughter of Karl Marx. She was herself a socialist activist, who sometimes worked as a literary translator. Involved in an unhappy personal relationship with prominent British atheist Edward Aveling, she committed suicide by poison at the age of 43.

Piers Paul Read (born 1941 in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire) is a British novelist and non-fiction writer. Read brought up in North Yorkshire, where he was educated at Ampleforth College. He read history in St John´s College, Cambridge, and received his B.A. in 1961 and M.A. in 1962. He spent two years in Germany, one in America and travelled extensively in the Far East and South America. In Berlin he worked on his first novel Game in Heaven with Tussy Marx (1966). His stay in Berlin inspired his second novel The Junkers (1968; in finnish Erään suvun tarina 1971) and confirmed the general sympathy towards the Germans that he felt on account of his mothers part-German ancestry. In 1967–68 Read was a practising Catholic and Vice-President of the Catholic Writers Guild of England and Wales. Reads first notable success was his novel Monk Dawson (1969), which was later made into the film of the same name (1998). The experience of spending a year in New York he used in his fourth novel The Professors Daughter (1971; Professorin tytär 1972).
Read is best known for his non-fiction book Alive: the story of the Andes survivors (1974; Elossa! 1974) which is the story of the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes mountains. The book was adapted into the film Alive: The Miracle of the Andes (1993; Elossa). The book The Train Robbers (1978; Junaryöstäjät 1978) is a story about the Great Train Robbery in England 1963. Reads novels are strongly influenced by his Catholic faith. His stories focus on the religious themes of sin and redemption. Read writes in a fairly traditional, linear style and he often uses plot elements from popular fiction, especially the thriller, like espionage, murder and conspiracy theories. Most of his main characters are fairly unsympathetic and some of them commit horrific deeds before they finally convert to God.

Almost all of Reads novels are set in Europe. Many of his books show a great interest and sympathy especially for Germany - quite unusual in British literature – and for Eastern countries like Russia and Poland. In The Knights of the Cross (1997), he explicitly satirizes the expectations and prejudices of the British readership towards the Germans.

Teos The Train Robbers (1978; Junaryöstäjät 1978) kuvaa Englannissa 1963 tapahtunutta suurta junaryöstöä. Romaani A Season in the West (1988; ei suom.) sai James Tait Black Memorial -palkinnon. Elämäkertateos Alec Guinness (2003) ei ole ilmestynyt suomeksi.

Eleanor "Tussy" Marx (1855 Lontoo – 1898 Lontoo) oli saksalais-englantilainen kirjailija, poliittinen aktivisti ja kääntäjä. Hän oli Karl Marxin nuorin tytär. Politiikasta kiinnostuneesta Eleanorista tuli kuusitoistavuotiaana isänsä sihteeri, ja hän seurasi isäänsä sosialistien kokouksiin eri puolille maailmaa. Karl Marx jätti viime vuosinaan Eleanorin huoleksi Pääoman englanninkielisen laitoksen ja muiden keskeneräisten tekstiensä julkaisun. Vuonna 1884 Eleanor Marx oli perustamassa Socialist League -järjestöä. Muita perustajajäseniä olivat muun muassa William Morris ja Edward Aveling. 1880-luvulla Eleanor Marx kiinnostui teatterista ja kirjallisuudesta. Hän uskoi, että taide olisi sopiva väline edistämään sosialismia ja feminismiä. Marx oli myös merkittävä kääntäjä, ja hän käänsi englanniksi muun muassa Gustave Flaubertin Rouva Bovaryn ja Henrik Ibsenin Kansanvihollisen. Vuonna 1898 Eleanor Marx sai selville, että hänen kumppanillaan Edward Avelingilla oli suhde nuoreen näyttelijättäreen. Marx ehdotti Avelingille kaksoisitsemurhaa.
