Nico (born Christa Päffgen; 16 October 1938 – 18 July 1988)[1][2] was a German singer-songwriter, lyricist, composer, musician,fashion model, and actress, who initially rose to fame as a Warhol Superstar in the 1960s. She is known for both her vocal collaboration on The Velvet Underground's debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), and her work as a solo artist from the late 1960s through the 1980s.

She also had roles in several films, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andy Warhol'sChelsea Girls (1966), as herself.

Many of the songs on the album have instrumental work from The Velvet Underground, whom Nico had previously collaborated with the year before on The Velvet Underground and Nico, as well as song writing credits from members of the band. The song "I'll Keep It with Mine", which is also featured on the album, was written by Bob Dylan, and the album also features three songs by Jackson Browne, who also contributes guitar to the album.

Chelsea Girl is the debut first solo album by Nico.
It was released 1971 by Verve Records, also home to The Velvet Underground.

The name of the album is a reference to Andy Warhol's 1966 film Chelsea Girls, which Nico starred in.

First on Side B on vinyl is titled "Chelsea Girls".

After collaborating as a singer with The Velvet Underground on their debut The Velvet Underground & Nico   Warhol superstar Nico toured with the band in Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable (EPI) multimedia roadshow.
Nico took up residence in a New York City coffeehouse as solo folk chanteuse, accompanied in turn by acquainted guitarists, such as Tim Hardin, Jackson Browne and Leonard Cohen, but also her Velvet Underground bandmates Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison and John Cale.

NICO & ANDY WARHOL  ..  1960’s pop culture femme fatale, Nico, was introduced to Andy Warhol by Bob Dylan and soon became part of his clique of “Superstars,” working with him on experimental films like Chelsea Girls, The Closet and Sunset. It was in 1967 when Warhol managed the The Velvet Underground that Nico was to join the band as their “chanteuse” at Andy’s request. Nico’s unique Teutonic voice was used as the lead vocal on “Femme Fatale“, “All Tomorrow’s Parties“, “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and backing vocal on “Sunday Morning“, on their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico.   The album would go on to become one of the most influential rock albums of our time even though it was it was overlooked when it was first released.

History :

Some of her accompanists wrote songs for her to sing, and these form the backbone of Chelsea Girl. Browne and Hardin contributed some songs, "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" by John Cale was part of the earliest Velvet Underground repertoire  and Reed, Cale and Morrison in various combinations contributed four more songs.
Additionally, Bob Dylan gave her one of his songs to record: "I'll Keep It with Mine".

Musically, Chelsea Girl is best described as a cross between chamber folk and 1960s pop. The musical backing is relatively simple, consisting of one or two guitars or, alternatively, a keyboard instrument, played by either Browne or (a combination of) her Velvet Underground colleagues.

There are no drums or bass instruments. Adding to the chamber folk feel of the music is the strings and flute arrangement superimposed over the initial recordings by producer Tom Wilson and arranger Larry Fallon.

Rarity: The second Velvet Underground album in all but name and issued in the same year as the seminal groundbreaking debut.

The very first copies of this record were issued in the US in 1967 on Verve

Early copies are the most expensive in the world;  (ABOUT  15.000  € !!! )

In the UK it was pressed in 1971 on MGM, and same year on Polydor as per THIS copy.

These are scarce and difficult to find in top conditions and if a better example than this exists, well I would love to see it.

Both cover and record are vulnerable due to format and content, both often seen, when found, in poor conditions.

This classic has always proved difficult to find no matter were it was pressed and this one is connoisseur standard .

The German beauty queen that came to music fame via her contributions with The Velvet Underground. The album’s title is from the famous Chelsea Hotel in New York which was used by many cerebrities of various types in those heady days of over-indulgence and experimentation.

Dylan Thomas, Arthur Miller, Jackson Pollock, Allen Ginsberg, Edith Piaf, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen (he made a famous song about his experiences there) and Janis Joplin have all lived there.

This is an album of stunning beauty .

Nico was unique, a one-off, no-one sounds quite like her and this album for those who have not heard it, simply carries on where the first Velvet Underground album ends :
