Original title:  Crash

Elokuvan alkuperäinen nimi:  Crash

The Winner of 3 Oscars in 2005

Paul Haggisin Los Angelesiin sijoittuvas-
sa karheassa draamassa törmäilee toisiin-
sa sekalainen joukko ihmisiä, joilla kaikilla
on oma ristinsä kannettavanaan.

Enkelten kaupungin pinnan alla ihmiset e-
lävät pelkojensa ja ennakkoluulojensa or-
jina. Mitä enemmän asukkaat yrittävät lu-
kita talojaan ja tunteitaan, sitä kohtalok-
kaimmin seurauksin he törmäävät toisiin-
sa. Köyhät, rikkaat, lainvalvojat, rikolliset,
valkoiset ja värilliset... lista on loputon.

Kahden vuorokauden aikana ventovieraat
ihmiset jättävät jälkensä toistensa elämä-
än, kun rakkaus muuttuu häpeäksi, oikeus
vääryydeksi ja suojelu veriteoksi. L.A.
Crash on kuitenkin elokuva toivosta, sillä
se osoittaa, että pahakin pystyy äärimmäi-
seen hyvyyteen.

"L.A. Crashia voi suositella laatuelokuvien
ystäville. Elokuva on Oscarinsa totisesti
ansainnut."

Issues of race and gender cause a group
of strangers in Los Angeles to physically
and emotionally collide in this drama from
director and screenwriter Paul Haggis.
Graham (Don Cheadle) is a police detec-
tive whose brother is a street criminal and
it hurts him to know his mother cares mo-
re about his ne'er-do-well brother than him.
Graham's partner is Ria (Jennifer Esposi-
to), who is also his girlfriend, though she
has begun to bristle at his emotional dis-
tance, as well as his occasional insensiti-
vity over the fact he's African-American
and she's Hispanic. Rick (Brendan Fraser)
is an L.A. district attorney whose wife,
Jean (Sandra Bullock), makes little secret
of her fear and hatred of people unlike
herself. Jean's worst imaginings about
people of color are confirmed when her
SUV is carjacked by two African-Ameri-
can men -- Anthony (Chris Bridges, aka
Ludacris), who dislikes white people as
much as Jean hates blacks, and Peter
(Larenz Tate), who is more open minded.
Cameron (Terrence Howard) is a well-to-
do African-American television producer
with a beautiful wife, Christine (Thandie
Newton). While coming home from a par-
ty, Cameron and Christine are pulled over
by Officer Ryan (Matt Dillon) who subjects
them to a humiliating interrogation (and
her to an inappropriate search) while his
new partner, Officer Hansen (Ryan Phil-
lippe), looks on. Daniel (Michael Pena)
is a hard-working locksmith and dedica-
ted father who discovers that his looks
don't lead many of his customers to trust
him. And Farhad (Shaun Toub) is a Midd-
le Eastern shopkeeper who is so constan-
tly threatened in the wake of the 9/11 at-
tacks that he decided he needs a gun to
defend his family. L.A. Crash was the first
directorial project for award-winning tele-
vision and film writer Haggis.

Over a thirty-six hour period in Los Ange-
les, a handful of disparate people's lives
intertwine as they deal with the tense ra-
ce relations that belie life in the city. Am-
ong the players are: the Caucasian dist-
rict attorney, who uses race as a political
card; his Caucasian wife, who, having re-
cently been carjacked by two black men,
believes that her stereotypical views of
non-whites is justified and cannot be con
sidered racism; the two black carjackers
who use their race both to their advanta-
ge and as an excuse; partnered Cauca-
sian police constables, one who is a ra-
cist and uses his authority to harass non-
whites, and the other who hates his part-
ner because of those racist views, but
who may have the same underlying valu-
es in his subconscious; a black film direc-
tor and his black wife, who believes her
husband doesn't support their black back-
ground enough, especially in light of an
incident with the racist white cop; partne-
red police detectives and sometimes lo-
vers, one Hispanic female and the other
black male, the latter who is dealing with
a drugged out mother that feels he isn't
concerned enough about taking care of
family; an East Asian man who is run ov-
er but who is hiding some valuable cargo
in the back of his van; a Persian store ow-
ner, who feels he isn't getting satisfaction
from American society when his store is
robbed time and time again; and a Hispa-
nic locksmith, who just wants to keep his
family, especially his young daughter, sa-
fe in a seemingly unsafe world.

"Very powerful drama."

"L.A. Crash reached a wide audience, its
fans identifying a forthright frankness on
race relations that they hadn't seen since
Do the Right Thing."
