A remake of the 1937 classic, this time as a musical about a Hollywood couple going through bad times. Would-be singer Esther Blodgett (Judy Garland) finds herself taken under the wing of fading star Norman Maine (James Mason) when she saves him from making a drunken fool of himself on stage. Changing her name to Vicki Lester, Esther becomes a star, and is soon married to Norman. However, as Vicki's star rises, so Norman's falls. Harold Arlen/Ira Gershwin songs include 'The Man That Got Away'.

Judy Garland's movie career is one that's left film enthusiasts with many, many wonderful performances to enjoy. But was any quite as good as the work she put into the excellent A Star Is Born?

A Star Is Born teams Garland with James Mason, for one of Hollywood's most cherished musicals. Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin teamed up on the songs, and we follow the story of Garland's Esther, a singer whose career is just starting to take off. Going in the other direction is Mason's Norman, an actor struggling with drink. These two opposites soon attract, although A Star Is Born is no fairytale: this is a film dealing with no shortage of issues.

Even with all the pills and her other personal problems this film is Judy Garland at her finest. She always did put passion and sadness in all the songs but her rendition of The Man That Got Away brought a tear to my eye and made me wonder if she was singing about anyone in particular, her father perhaps? The film itself has been restored a couple of times. In 1983 film historian Ronald Haver found nearly all the cut sequences that the Hollywood butchers had cut out after it's original premiere, and restored it to almost it's original length. The digital remastered version on this DVD has picture and musical material that had been recently discovered. My copy of this film was new when I bought it so I can't understand why the subtitles only seem to work on the speaking dialogue and not on the actual songs, shame really as it would have been nice to follow the lyrics as I'm partially deaf and really didn't want to turn the TV up. Both James Mason and Judy Garland shine in this film it was perfect casting, him as the drunk fading star and her his discovery who is propelled to stardom under his guidance. This film gives us all hope that one day it'll happen to us.
