Get ready for the ultimate showdown! It?s been nearly ten years since Freddy, from the Nightmare On Elm Street series, invaded people?s dreams to exact his deadly form of revenge and murder. But now, his memory has been systematically erased by a town determined to put an end to Freddy once and for all. Until, that it, Freddy resurrects Jason, the equally iconic madman from the Friday The 13th series. Jason is the perfect means for Freddy to once again instill fear on Elm Street and start a new reign of terror. But as the bodies begin to pile up, he discovers that Jason isn?t willing to cease his murderous ways and step aside so easily. Now, with a terrified town in the middle, the two titans of terror enter into a horrifying showdown of epic proportions.

Amazon.co.uk Review

After 11 years in development hell and screenplay drafts by 13 different writers, the long-awaited smackdown of Freddy vs Jason finally arrived in cinemas in 2003. After making their respective debuts in Friday the 13th (1980) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, replacing long-time Jason performer Kane Hodder) and razor-gloved Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) square off in a slasher-franchise combo-deal that only their most devoted fans will appreciate; it turns out this is a lightweight match in which nobody wins.

It's an average entry in the histories of these horror icons, comparable to half of their previous sequels, and Bride of Chucky director Ronny Yu satisfies purists with plenty of gushing blood and mayhem when Freddy recruits Jason to slice 'n' dice the ill-fated teens who've forgotten Freddy's once-formidable reign of terror. While it logically connects the gruesome legacies of Nightmare's Elm Street and Friday's Camp Crystal Lake, this horror hybrid is shockingly uninspired. It briefly peaks when Freddy gives the unconscious Jason a dream-world pummelling, but ultimately, their showdown's a letdown --Jeff Shannon

I grew up watching old Fred and the J man, not to mention Mr .Myers and some of the lesser slashers of the 70s 80s & 90s (The Burning being amongst the top dogs). So when I heard this twin headed beast was in the works I was excited to say the least, but the years passed since the rumours surfaced and then it seemed the whole project was passing into legend until, bam, confirmation. Now by this point I'd grown up a little and moved out of the safety of the slasher genre and started to explore further afield. During those dark years I had found my self disappointed by more than my fair share of supposed up and coming `next big things' and as such started to fear the worst of this little crossover. However I can tell you, with no small amount of relief, that I was pleasantly surprised - no - more than that, I was well impressed.
THE GOOD:
- Great nods to both film series that don't feel forced into the proceedings which will keep fans (like me at least) happy.
- When these boys scrap they go completely off on one.
- Sexy enough leading lady to carry things along nicely.
- Some amazing kills from both sides, but Jasons storm through a corn field rave has to be the highlight showing the big J for the beast he truly is, taking him nicely out of the stalk and slash zone we're so used to seeing him in into all out mass brutality. It works. Well.
- Some annoying enough teens end up getting their comeuppance.
THE BAD:
- Due to the iconic nature of both bad guys it's getting a little hard to muster any reals scares out of the pair - fortunately enough the movie is such riotous messy fun that this is ending up being sort of a plus rather than a negative.
CONCLUSION:
A total blast that satisfied this fan, at least, and as such I hope would please a lot of others and perhaps garner a few more followers to both series. I'm more of a Jason fan I'll admit - I think the nightmare/Freddy series started out well enough but degenerated into cheesy one liners, which are present here but not in the tooth grating overabundance they littered the later nightmare films. However this movie breathed some new life into the series for me and totted up another winner for the Friday series. A great little film that is a lot of fun and is a great addition to any horror freaks creepy little collection.
