cd, The Texas Trumpets featuring the Eastside Band: s/t [jazz, blues]

This self-titled release features some true jazz trumpet powerhouses teaming up with a spectacular backing band for a set of loose, fun, and funky Texas blues and jazz. The Texas Trumpets are Martin Banks, Donald "Duck" Jennings, Pat Patterson and Ephraim Owens. Banks, Jennings, and Patterson have played with legends like Ellington, Dizzy, Etta James and Lou Rawls; Owens is a talented young Austin trumpeter and bandleader. This is an album mostly of instrumentals, though there are a few blues-oriented slow jams that feature vocals (that's the golden throat of Donald "Duck" Jennings on "Last Night". Vocals or not, the Texas Trumpets are hot. "Tropical Breeze" is funky contemporary jazz; the robust "Sweet Spot" recalls the easy funk of Sam & Dave. A nice touch are the "JB" intros and outros, which find the Trumpets riffing over a grooving ostinato.

But whatever style the Trumpets tackle, it's the Eastside Band that really sells it. Clarence Pierce (guitar), Larry DC Williams (organ), Burley Manor (bass) and Charles Shaw on drums keep a tight rhythm from start to finish, but it sounds effortless, as if the musicians had struck up a backyard jam session around the barbecue pit and pressed "record" on the stereo. Altogether, the Texas Trumpets and the Eastside Band have put together a spectacular debut.
